ALWAYS NIGHT

Dans le cadre de la 2ème édition de la Biennale Son, la Grange de la Ferme-Asile accueille l’exposition ALWAYS NIGHT des artistes Pauline Boudry et Renate Lorenz.

Pour l’installation filmique All The Things She Said, les artistes ont invité l’activiste anti-guerre Chelsea Manning comme performeuse. Source d’inspiration de longue date pour les artistes, Manning est devenue mondialement connue après avoir révélé, via WikiLeaks, des documents sur les atrocités de guerre commises par les États-Unis en Irak. Condamnée à la suite de ces révélations, elle a passé sept ans en prison avant que Barack Obama ne commue sa peine en 2017.

Dans l’installation filmique All The Things She Said, on voit Manning jouer un set de DJ dans un club vide de Berlin, le SchwuZ. Le son est enregistré avec plusieurs dispositifs d’enregistrement, soulignant l’importance de chaque perspective sonore dans l’expérience collective du jeu de la musique, de l’écoute, de la danse et de la célébration. Le vaste espace du SchwuZ résonne, laissant son histoire – celle du plus ancien club queer et trans d’Allemagne – s’inscrire dans la texture sonore. Dans All The Things She Said, le son est porteur d’un potentiel queer : d’une force de cohésion face à la guerre et à la répression.

As part of the 2nd edition of the Biennale Son, the Ferme-Asile is hosting the ALWAYS NIGHT exhibition by artists Pauline Boudry and Renate Lorenz.

For the film installation All The Things She Said, the artists invited anti-war activist Chelsea Manning as a performer. Manning, a long-time inspiration for the artists, became widely known after publishing material on U.S. war atrocities in Iraq through WikiLeaks. Following her conviction, she spent seven years in prison before Barack Obama commuted her sentence in 2017.

In Pauline Boudry and Renate Lorenz’s film installation All The Things She Said, we see Manning playing a DJ set in an empty club in Berlin, SchwuZ. The sound is recorded with multiple microphones, highlighting the importance of each sonic perspective in the collective experience of playing music, listening, dancing, and celebrating. The vast space of SchwuZ resonates, allowing its history as Germany’s oldest queer and trans club to become part of the sound. In All The Things She Said, sound arrives with a potential for queerness – a force for shaping togetherness in the face of war and repression.
